Rasta in Hawaii

Posted: 05/16/2012
Here we have a winter in Hawaii clip from Dave Rastovich's time on Oahu. Rasta talks about venturing past the Pipeline scene to the shore's other waves, and does a bit of experimenting with surf sleds.

Rasta has strayed from the norm in many areas of his life and career, and surfboards are no different. The Australian's board of choice in Hawaii for the last couple seasons is not exactly what you'd expect in North Shore juice-- a winged twin-fin shaped by Akila Aipa (which you..... More >

John John Florence Wins First WCT Even..

Posted: 05/16/2012
The finals of the Rio Pro saw some impressive performances from the stacked field. But the most convincing display of surfing came from the least seasoned competitor-- rookie John John Florence, who won his first WCT final today at age 19.

As predicted earlier this month by the absent Kelly Slater, it was only a matter of time before Florence bagged his first contest victory. Now, having won in the heaviest of waves at the Volcom Pipeline Pro in January, and in the smallest of..... More >

Driftwood Collective's Board Recycling..

Posted: 05/15/2012
Driftwood Collective has released its third episode to give you ideas on how to recycle your old surfboards. Much to the benefit of the environment, many companies are taking steps to go green.

That responsibility falls on surfers, too, as materials that have been used in the past to make surf planks are quite harmful to the environment.

Recycling the old surf plank does take some muscle work, but the results are priceless. Check out the video below by Driftwood..... More >

Quarterfinals Set at Billabong Rio Pro

Posted: 05/15/2012
With tricky conditions and plenty of swell left at Barra Da Tijuaca, the Billabong Rio Pro saw some wild heats today as they ran Rounds 4 and 5 to set up the quarterfinals.

The undisputed heat of the day came from two competitors who are familiar with nail-biting finishes-- Julian Wilson and John John Florence. Wilson started the heat with a brilliantly surfed left where threw his fins skyward three times for a 9.83, which he then backed up with a clean forehand tube, for a 7.17...... More >

Billabong Pro Rio: Medina Loses in Rou..

Posted: 05/14/2012
After a handful of lay days in Rio de Janeiro, the world's best were called back into action for Round 2 of the Billabong Pro today.

Sally Fitzgibbons beat Coco Ho to take the ladies event over the weekend. And a boost in swell has seen the primary venue of Barra Da Tijuaca come to life with some board-snapping peaks.

The biggest heat of the day was arguably the first, where Brazilian phenom Gabriel Medina lost to fellow Brazilian youngster and event wildcard Peterson..... More >

Cameos include Dillon Perillo, the Coffin brothers, Nathaniel Curran, Jeremy Ryan, and some guy named Kelly Slater.... More >

Missing Mundaka

Posted: 05/11/2012
For 10 years the World Tour invaded the Basque fishing village in Northern Spain, Mundaka, to relish in the endless lefthand tubes that periodically march down the giant rivermouth sandbank. The event was cancelled in 2009 for financial and logistical reasons. But as you're about to see, the wave is still there, in all its glory. Here's footage from a recent swell that attracted some of Europe's finest tube-hunters:... More >

Hawaii-2k

Posted: 05/10/2012
While the internet has certainly changed the job description of pro surfers worldwide, Hawaiian surfers have arguably benefited most from this shift.

Flynn Novak's career as a Pipe specialist hadn't earned him a big-name sponsor or a big paycheck until a clip of his small wave aerial antics at Rocky Point, specifically his 'Flynnstone Flip' won him the 2010 Kustom Airstrike crown and a $50K payday. The trick has since landed him a Transworld Surf cover and feature.

Medina Cools Down as World Title Hunt ..

Posted: 05/09/2012
You may not have noticed that the webcast was down for most of Round 1 at the Billabong Pro Rio. That's alright. The third stop on tour is like a nasty speed-bump in the yearlong schedule. But just to keep this year interesting, Kelly Slater skipped out with an injured heel, opening the door to the other top ranked surfers on tour, which charges the event with some new importance.

The window of opportunity was felt by those still in the hunt for this year's title. The top seeds..... More >
