French is the language of love, so it comes as no surprise that The Quiksilver Pro France got the foreplay out of the way in 4 foot peaks at Les Bourdaines last night. Round 1 and the first 4 heats of round 2 were completed on day 1 of the waiting period, giving contest directors time to wait until the ocean is really in the mood to put out. Due to the time changes, the 8 am start time in France means that californians can expect an 11 PM (i hope thats right) start time, which means you'll have plenty of time to gulp red wine and eat baguettes with brie in preparation.
Coming off his 2 career best results, a 3rd at J-bay and 2nd at Trestles, Dane Reynolds was able to keep his roll going in France, winning a close heat against Nate Curran and Jay Thompson. Close friend Nathaniel Curran led most of the heat, leaving Reynolds needing a big score in the dying minutes. Dane was able to find a long right, crushing it for a 8.5 and the heat win. He also netted the biggest heat score of the event, a 17.33 out of 20 two wave total.
Fellow Young Gun, Julian Wilson, made the most of his Quiksliver wildcard slot, beating Bede Durbidge, and Dean Morrison, and advancing straight into round 3. Wilson tore through 2 solid lefts, leaving the 2 aussie veterans scratching their meat pies.
Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson breezed through their round 2 heats as well, giving them some time off to soak up some French culture before round 3 starts.
Brazilian Adriano De Souza, currently ranked 3rd in the world, was upset in the last heat of the day, by Aussie Phil Macdonald in a very close heat. Macdonald connected a series of reeling lefts, handing De Souza his first 33rd of the season.
The next call is set for 8 am in France.
