In a wave starved final on Sunday, Huntington Beach hero Brett Simpson defeated Jordy Smith to win his 2nd consecutive Hurley US Open of Surfing, adding yet another $100,000 to his pocket. Simpson took full advantage of the waves he caught in lackluster surf, proving his local knowledge of the wave to be invaluable while taking out the world's top ranked surfer in Smith.

The Final Day at the Hurley US Open of Surfing began in exciting fashion as Jordy Smith and Miguel Pupo put on a show with a flurry of airs in the morning's first quarterfinal. Jordy edged Pupo, and would go on to eliminate reigning world champion Mick Fanning on his way to the final heat against hometown hero Brett Simpson.

Simpson narrowly edged 9-time world champion Kelly Slater in the second semifinal, winning the nail bitter by a 0.04. For Slater this is the 2nd straight contest in which he's lost to a hometown hero. At J-bay, he lost by 0.04 to wild card Sean Holmes.

Sunday's final capped an exciting 9 days of top-level surfing. Fans were raving about the undeniable leap in high performance on display this year, as a fresh young crew of up-and-coming stars unleashed (and landed) a wide variety of progressive maneuvers. While the waves didn't always deliver, the surfers and their surfing certainly did.
