Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 July, 2009 : - -
Huntington Beach -- Set against the backdrop of the world's largest
professional surfing competition, the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing
Festival, July 23 to 26, is the premier consumer showcase for the
action sport industry. Bustling with more than 100 sponsor and vendor
displays, the massive festival lures 400,000 spectators to buy and
sample products and services from the action sports industry. Please
visit usopenofsurfing.com for more info.
Anchored by the Hurley Microphone for Youth Stage, the annual
U.S. Open of Surfing Festival is an interactive exposition featuring
autograph signings, DJs, guest emcees and prize giveaways. The 12 acre
festival also showcases dozens of high-energy displays including the
Hurley Experience, Nike 6.0 Brand Experience, Corona Longboard Display,
Paul Mitchell Hair Salon and the Transworld SURF Model Search.
While the 2009 Hurley U.S. Open is all about putting surfing
back on center stage, there are myriad things to experience beyond the
heats on the South Side of the Pier. The U.S. Open isn't just one of
the most storied events in surfing; it's a full-on youth culture
happening. Expo highlights include:
The Hurley Brand Experience Zone: Hurley will feature the best
in boardshort technology with the Phantom P120 (120 percent stretch)
and the Phantom Weld.
Nike 6.0 Brand Experience: Nike 6.0 delivers footwear and
apparel to support the new generation of action sports athletes who are
changing the worlds of surf, snow, moto, BMX, wake and freeski. The Sum
of Six fuses memorabilia and athlete content, bringing to life the
self-expression, lifestyle, and commitment to sport of the 6.0 athletes
including Kai Barger, Mason Aguirre, Carissa Moore, Garrett Reynolds,
Simon Dumont, and James Stewart.
Hurley's Walk the Walk Grand Championships: Hurley's Walk the
Walk is a cross between "Project Runway" and "Battle of the Bands"
where five high schools spend time at Hurley modifying a line, coming
up with their own designs, and then displaying their creations on the
runway in a fashion show. The winner - deemed by a panel of celebrity
judges - will win $10,000 for their school's art and design programs.
Schools participating: Dana Hills, San Clemente, Lincoln-San Diego,
Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach; Friday at 4:00 p.m.
Hurley Microphone for Youth Stage: Hurley will be hosting a
long list of music acts from Thursday through Saturday, including
Hurley's own Tim Curran, Sashamon, LA hip-hop sensation Shwayze and the
soulful, Nashville-based singer Mat Kearney, who's been burning up the
charts in recent months. All shows go from 4-7 p.m.,
Thursday-Saturday.
Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo: Firmly grounded in surfing's
roots, the Hurley U.S. Open will be hosting the Sacred Craft display.
This is a place where a handful of the world's best shapers will gather
and show off their latest work. Confirmed labels include: Rusty, Lost,
Channel Islands, Stewart, The Wegener brothers, Timmy Patterson, Jeff
"Doc" Lausch and others. In addition, there will be live shaping
demonstrations with Pat Rawson, Maurice Cole, John Carper and other
legendary shapers.
WPS All-Stars: In addition to the 10 All-Stars as voted into
the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing by the fans, the WPS All Star Event
host a series of autograph sessions in the venue along with a
star-studded PWC-enhanced expression session in the water.
True Performance Walk of Champions: Paying homage to 50 years
of competitive surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier, the Hurley U.S.
Open of Surfing venue will be infused with history, the highlight of
which is the "True Performance" Walk of Champions. This unique tribute
pays homage to the champions of the original U.S./West Coast
Championships (1959-72), Op Pro Surfing Championships (1982-93) and the
U.S. Open of Surfing (1994 to date). Across the street, the salute to
surf history continues with the Surfing Walk of Fame (Jack's
Surfboards) and Surfers' Hall of Fame (Huntington Surf & Sport)
induction ceremonies.
